A Peripheral Perspective — Survive or Thrive
Some of you have given everything to survive the massive changes over the last three-plus years. You may have closed your business, started another, or found creative ways to survive long enough for the markets to return.
Since 2020, you have navigated:
Political discord.Work from home.Market fluctuations.Financial uncertainty.Too many or few resources.…
Congratulations. You survived.
You are better at adapting to disruption than you were.
So what are you doing about A.I. and a dozen other potential disruptions?
Survival in a highly disruptive environment is an accomplishment in itself.
But you are never done adapting because change and disruption are always present.
So, how is it that some people and companies do more than adapt to survive?
They thrive in any environment.
Here are 3 skills of Thrivers (aka Peripheral Thinkers™)

1. Continual Learning
Stop the eye roll. This kind of learning goes beyond improving job skills and industry expertise.
Peripheral Thinkers™’ version of learning involves a culture of curiosity for learning NEW things and skills. It’s not about improving your coding, writing, or management skills. It’s about increasing your ability to learn NEW things unrelated to your business. Things in the periphery.
2. Knowledge Sharing
I know… Another eye roll. It’s common for people to return from a conference or training and share what they learned.
We have knowledge bases that store company best practices.
What’s uncommon and supremely powerful is sharing lessons from learning NEW things. Sailing. Your first opera. Meeting a business owner from Bali.
THEN, share what you learned with your team.
3. Preemptive Creation
This third skill is the secret sauce.
You and your people are learning new things. You are actively sharing lessons and insights across the organization. Perhaps even storing them in a repository.
Now, take a handful of lessons and string them together. What new solutions, approaches, and markets emerge?
It’s more than being one step ahead or on the bleeding edge. You are doing what the most inventive leaders do… you’re using multiple insights in new ways.
You are creating the future you want. You become the disruptor, not the disrupted.
This is how thriving companies innovate before and beyond obstacles.
They continually learn.
Share their lessons regardless of their immediate application to the business.
Encourage others to learn new things and share them with the group.
Combine the elements of lessons to solve old problems, create new things, and prepare for the future.
They proactively create.
They thrive.
